Woolworths, in collaboration with Queensland builder Spaceframe, have begun the expansion work of the existing Townsville Regional Distribution Centre (TDRC).
Improving availability for North Queensland customers
Upon conclusion of the expansion work, the site will more than double its original size, increasing to 10,000 square metres, hence becoming the largest food and grocery distribution centre in North Queensland, whilst improving its capacity to service local stores.
The expansion will result in the creation of 30 additional permanent jobs, in addition to 170 construction jobs across the seven months needed to complete the expansion.
Woolworths’ Chief Supply Chain Officer Paul Graham said: “This $12m investment in our Townsville Distribution Centre forms a key part of our ambition to create Australia’s best supply chain network for our customers. It will not only allow for more frequent, faster and fresher deliveries to local stores year-round, but also help build much needed resilience in our North Queensland supply chain network in the event of natural disasters.”
When fully utilised, up to 340,000 cartons of fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, eggs, milk, gorceries and liquor will be moved through TDRC, which currently services 39 supermarkets in the region.
